Brand new music from Boy Meets Girl
‘5’ – an EP from the globally renowned song writing duo Released March 5 2021
George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam AKA Boy Meets Girl return with their first new music release since their 2002 album ‘The Wonderground’. ‘5’ is a collection of newly recorded songs written by the duo in recent years.
Released on March 5 – this EP is unmistakably Boy Meets Girl. Their prolific style that saw them write and record some of the biggest global hits ever, including ‘Waiting For A Star To Fall’ and Whitney Houston’s ‘How Will I Know’ and ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’ – chime throughout, and it’s this sound that made them one of the most sought after songwriting duos of the 80s and 90s.
Upon announcing their first release in more than 18 years, George and Shannon said, “All though we never stopped writing, 2019/20 brought on the urge to record some particular songs. We felt amongst some of the things we had written there was a return to the brighter, upbeat sound of Boy Meets Girl and it felt right to “get the band back together!”… so to speak!”
Streams/MP3 of ‘5’ available on request.
The unique story of Boy Meets Girl is one that is inspiring and aspirational both professionally and personally. It is a partnership of love and heartbreak, with huge highs and challenging lows but throughout their journey their creative connection and ultimately a deep trusting friendship has seen George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam remain passionate songwriting partners for almost 40 years.
Originally a Seattle band, they first met at a wedding at which the two were both hired to perform, this meeting ultimately led to the pair falling in love, getting married and forming Boy Meets Girl, combining their musical, vocal and lyrical talents.
They moved to Los Angeles and shortly after (1985) they released their self-titled debut album which saw their first commercial chart success with ‘Oh Girl’ reaching number 39 in the US top 40 pop charts. In that same year, they also achieved their first global number one as songwriters with Whitney Houston’s smash hit ‘How Will I Know’, a feat they would repeat in 1988 with Whitney’s win for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance on ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’.
The hits continued. 1988 also saw the release of a new Boy Meets Girl album, ‘Reel Life’, that featured the smash hit ‘Waiting For A Star To Fall’ that reached the top five in the US and was number one throughout Europe and Canada. It remains a staple of radio stations and Spotify playlists to this day as well as the catalyst for a multitude of records that have sampled it including three in 2005 alone (Cabin Crew ‘Star To Fall’, Sunset Strippers ‘Falling Stars’ and Mylo’s ‘In Your Arms’)!
Shannon and George recorded their subsequent album ‘New Dream’ in 1991, and continued to write throughout the ‘90’s for a variety of artists including girl and boy bands in the UK, achieving two top ten hits with the bands OTT and Girlthing.
While maintaining a strong friendship and musical partnership, the end of the ‘90’s brought the end of their marriage. Continuing to write through that time brought about the genesis of the poignant album ‘The Wonderground’, released in 2002 on their own BoyMeetsGirl Music label.
